What is transport?
Transport is the movement of people or things from one place to another.
What are the forms of transport that people use?
Cars.
Buses.
Trains.
Trams.
Taxis.
Bicycles.
Walking.
Which form of transport is used the most?
Cars are the main form of transport that people in developed countries use.
Why is this?
Governments in these countries encourage people to own their own cars by building more roads and freeways.
Public transport is usually too expensive, inconvenient and unreliable so most people do not want to use it.
It is dangerous for people to walk or cycle because of so many cars on the roads.
Why is transport an environmental problem?
As more cars are built and used, the environment suffers.
Land is destroyed to make way for roads.
Species of wildlife lose their homes, so they must find new homes or become extinct.
Air pollution and noise pollution distress animals and the air that they breathe in.
What can you do to help?
Ask your parents to help you to write to your government ministers and ask them to spend more on buses, trams, trains and cycle paths.
Plan your trips so that you can use public transport, a bicycle or walk as often as you can.
Organise with your friends, your parents and their parents to car pool if you and your friends are going to the same places.
Remember?/p>
Make the time and effort to use the most environmentally-friendly forms of transport that you can find.
