What is the Earth Charter?
The Earth Charter is a set of rules that were made by a huge group of thousands of people and companies. These rules help us to make the world a cleaner and safer place for all living things.
What does the Earth Charter talk about?
Respecting life on Earth in all its forms, from plants to animals to humans.
Speaking up for and defending other living things when you see them being hurt.
Treating all people with care, tolerance and patience.
Trying to create a world where all people are treated equally and fairly.
Trying to create a world where humans use the environment and its resources responsibly.
Do you know why you are important in making these rules work?
You are a part of our Earth, which is and always should be the home to:
Humans.
Animals.
Plants.
Usable soil.
Clean water and air.
This can not happen unless you and all of the people who live on Earth care for it by following the rules of the Earth Charter.
Why did the Earth Charter need to be created?
Because we are:
Dirtying our environment with pollutants.
Creating too much waste.
Using too much of the resources we have, like water, food, clothes and electricity.
Because of this:
Biodiversity on Earth is suffering, as more and more species of animals and plants die.
Humans on Earth are suffering, as millions of people around the world do not have enough of the things they need to survive.
What can you do to help?
Take care of all living things and be kind to everyone around you, no matter what they look like or even if they are different to you.
Try not to do anything that you think might harm your surroundings.
Reduce, reuse and recycle as much as you can.
Share ideas with your family and friends about how to make the world a better place for everyone.
