What is corporate responsibility?
Most people who own big companies, or corporations, are more interested in making money than in taking care of the environment. Corporate responsibility means that the people who own big companies should take responsibility for the ways that their company hurts the environment.
What type of companies especially need to do this?
Oil companies.
Petrol companies.
Car making companies.
Supermarket and department store companies.
How do these companies harm us and the environment?
Creating a lot of waste and not getting rid of it safely. Unsafe dumping of waste kills animals and plants.
Causing air pollution and water pollution. The air that is breathed and the water that is drunk by humans, animals and plants is damaged by this.
How do the companies get away with this?
Pressuring their governments to not introduce laws that require companies to stop damaging the environment.
Telling the public that they are caring for the environment, without actually doing so.
Sending their waste to poor countries where governments are not very strict about how clean their countries are.
What can you do to help?
Ask your parents to:
Use websites such as responsibleshopper.org to find out which companies really do avoid harming the environment, and which ones don’t.
Buy organic food, to support local farmers.
Buy food that is made in your country, so that your family knows where and how it has been produced.
Remember?/p>
If you do not buy things from companies and countries that are harming the environment, then they will not be able to sell the goods they make.
