What is noise pollution?
Noise pollution is unwanted sound that is usually created by something humans are doing. It may be a loud noise or it may be a quieter noise that goes on a long time.
Where does noise pollution come from?
Trucks.
Cars.
Trains.
Aeroplanes.
Factories.
Houses being built.
Dogs and other animals.
Why does noise pollution matter?
Noise levels are getting higher, and this is a problem because:
Animals that live in or near areas that have noise pollution become distressed.
Animals that live in or near areas that have noise pollution may have to find new homes.
It can make our heart beat too fast.
It can affect our sleep and cause us to become tired, grumpy, nervous and stressed.
It can damage our hearing and even make us deaf.
What can the government do to reduce noise pollution?
Create stricter laws about noise pollution.
Make it illegal for people to have broken car and home burglar alarms that are too loud or that won't turn off.
Research ways of making our roads quieter.
Improve the design of engines and other machines so that they make less noise.
What can you do to help?
Watch the volume of your TV or stereo.
Close windows or doors in your house when there is a loud noise being made.
Tell one of your parents if you hear a loud noise coming from the car so that they can fix the problem.
