EnergiaO poder do vento A humanidade tem utilizado a partir de energia eólica para transporte, sob a forma de vela, há milhares de anos. Na verdade, as pessoas têm sido capazes de navegar mais tempo do que eles foram capazes de escrever, com a maior brevidade conhecida a imagem de uma embarcação à vela, a ser encontrada uma peça de cerâmica egípcia data de 3100 AC. O vento foi também aproveitado para moer grãos, bombear água e até mesmo serrar madeira, através da tecnologia dos moinhos. Os primeiros moinhos foram inventados na Pérsia cerca de 600 dC e usados apenas para moer grãos. Acredita-se que a tecnologia destes moinhos se propagou de volta para a Europa através das cruzadas e em 1100, os moinhos poderiam ser encontrados em toda a Europa. Até 1400, existiam cerca de 10000 turbinas eólicas na Inglaterra por si só. Perto do final do século 19, uma série de fatores combinados causaram o declínio da utilização dos moinhos. As áreas rurais foram despopuladas, muitas pessoas mudaram-se para cidades. O poder do vapor, eletricidade e o motor de combustão interna passaram a ser cada vez mais utilizados como alternativas. Na Inglaterra, havia apenas 350 lugares de trabalho até o final da I Guerra Mundial, este diminuiu para 50 até o final da II Guerra Mundial. Hoje, dos 90 moinhos ainda existentes na Inglaterra, muito poucos ainda estão em condições de funcionamento. A capacidade de produção de eletricidade a partir do vento foi desenvolvida em 1860 Moses Farmer. Moinhos começaram a ser utilizados para gerar eletricidade, no início do século 20, mas foi a choques petrolíferos da década de 1970, que impulsionou grave o interesse moderno na energia eólica como uma fonte energética alternativa. A energia eólica é uma forma de energia renovável limpa, abundante, segura e de baixo custo. A indústria de energia eólica está atualmente a crescer muito rapidamente em todo o mundo, com a Europa tendo um papel de liderança. Muitos ambientalistas consideram-na a forma de energia renovável mais provável para substituir métodos de geração de energia convencionais. Eletricidade eólica A energia eólica é capturada e convertida em eletricidade por dispositivos chamados turbinas eólicas. Existem dois tipos principais de turbinas: eixo vertical e eixo horizontal. Turbinas eólicas de eixo horizontal: A turbina de eixo horizontal é o tipo mais comum e geralmente se assemelha a uma hélice montada na torre. Os componentes desse tipo de turbina são: Um rotor constituído por duas ou três pás, com um diâmetro de 65 metros. Um eixo que liga o rotor de uma caixa de velocidade e um gerador que são contidos em uma horizontal nacelle por trás do rotor Uma torre que se situa entre 25 e 80 metros de altura, na qual o rotor e a nacelle são montadas. As lâminas são montadas perpendicularmente ao vento. O design das pás é de tal ordem que o vento é forçado a passar mais rapidamente ao longo da superfície superior, criando assim uma área de baixa pressão do ar e da força de "elevador". A combinação de elevador e arraste causas do rotor de giro, o que por sua vez gira o eixo e o gerador de forma a produzir eletricidade. O rotor é montado no alto de uma torre, a fim de aproveitar ventos mais fortes que sejam mais estáveis e constantes do que os ventos que podem ser encontrados mais próximos do terreno. Turbinas eólicas de eixo vertical: Este tipo de turbina é raramente usado para gerar eletricidade. É difícil para a montagem do eixo vertical em turbinas de uma torre e por isso, eles são obrigados a utilizar os menos produtivos e mais turbulento ventos que se encontram mais perto do solo. A máquina Darrieus, que foi patenteada em França, em 1927, é o tipo de turbina de eixo vertical mais frequentemente utilizada em termos de produção de eletricidade. Elas lembram um batedor de ovos e as lâminas são montadas paralelas ao vento. Tal como o eixo horizontal-turbina, as lâminas que rodam giram em um eixo que está ligado a uma caixa de velocidades e gerador. Nos dois tipos de turbina uma velocidade mínima do vento e necessária antes que a turbina esteja preparada para produzir eletricidade. Esta velocidade mínima pode se diferenciar de turbina para turbina, mas tem diminuído durante o tempo devido a avanços tecnológicos. Inversamente, ventos fortes podem sobrecarregar e danificar o gerador. Para prevenir tais danos, a turbina pode ser equipada com um limitador, ou a caixa de velocidade e gerador se pode se desengatar quando a velocidade do vento for superior a um máximo seguro. É comum ver várias turbinas eólicas agrupadas em “parques eólicos” por razões econômicas e praticas. Diminuindo o preço da geração de energia Historicamente, turbinas eólicas têm sido muito caras de se construir e foram capazes de produzir apenas pequenas quantidades de eletricidade. Isto impedia a força eólica de se tornar uma grande fonte de energia. No entanto, grandes avanços em pesquisa e desenvolvimento desde 1980 tem resultado em uma queda de 85% no custo de geração de energia pelo vento. O custo pela hora kilowatt (kWh) de vento gerando energia era de aproximadamente 5 centavos em 2001, o que baixou desde 1980 quanto o custo era de 30 centavos. Isto faz com que o custo da energia eólica seja comparável com o custo da eletricidade gerada por carvão ou gás e mais barato do que energia nuclear. O mercado da energia eólica A partir de 31 de dezembro de 2001, o total mundial de capacidade instalada de energia eólica era de aproximadamente 24.000 megawatts. Mais de 70% desta capacidade geradora foi localizada na Europa. A nível mundial, a capacidade total instalada de energia eólica aumentou cerca de 30% por cada ano durante os cinco anos para 2001. Atualmente, a Dinamarca obtém 15% de toda a sua energia elétrica a partir da energia eólica. A indústria de energia eólica vale cerca de US $ 1 bilhão por ano para a Dinamarca, e turbinas eólicas são importantes item de exportação. O Governo dinamarquês forneceu no passado incentivos fiscais e subsídios para apoiar a indústria. Alemanha deriva cerca de 3,5% da sua eletricidade a partir do vento. No entanto, é o líder mundial em termos de capacidade instalada, com 11500 turbinas eólicas proporcionando uma capacidade total de 8750 megawatts. O Reino Unido obtém cerca de 0,37% da sua eletricidade a partir da energia eólica e tem uma capacidade total instalada de 473,6 megawatts. No entanto, treze parques eólicos offshore estão planejados para o futuro próximo, cada uma com uma capacidade potencial de pelo menos 1000 megawatts. O EUA, como no final de 2001, é capaz de gerar eletricidade através do vento suficiente para suprir 1 milhão de lares americanos. Como um exemplo, a força eólica nos EUA proporciona eletricidade suficiente para 1 milhão de lares americanos, o que previne a de maneira eficaz a emissão de 6.8 milhões de toneladas de dióxido de carbono. A força eólica na Europa proporciona eletricidade suficiente para 10 milhões de lares europeus, prevenindo assim a emissão de 24 milhões de toneladas de dióxido de carbono. A construção de Parques eólicos e turbinas de vento podem criar muitos empregos, com fluxo obvio de benefícios para a economia. Por exemplo, a indústria eólica proporciona empregos para 35 mil pessoas na Alemanha e mais de 12 mil na Dinamarca. Parques eólicos podem ser também uma fonte de renda para os donos das terras em que são construídas, através de taxas de aluguel. Gerar eletricidade através do vento aumenta a diversidade energética, reduzindo a dependência de combustíveis fósseis. Isto é importante devido ao aumento de custo e a redução da disponibilidade de combustíveis fósseis, tornando a tecnologia atraente para nações em desenvolvimento. Outros inconvenientes da energia eólica Existe um número de preocupações comuns expressas pelos ambientalistas e do público em geral em matéria de energia eólica: Turbinas eólicas podem ser barulhentas podendo irritar pessoas que moram por perto Parques eólicos têm sido descritos como uma nódoa na paisagem, particularmente nas áreas cênicas ou anteriormente imaculadas. Para abordar algumas destas questões, a Dinamarca está desenvolvendo maiores e mais eficientes turbinas eólicas de modo que são necessárias menos turbinas em um parque eólico. Na Dinamarca, foi também construído o mundo do primeiro parque eólico offshore, que tem a vantagem de melhorar as condições do vento e, portanto, é capaz de produzir 60% mais eletricidade do que um equivalente em terra. O futuro A energia eólica é atualmente a fonte de energia de mais rápido crescimento do mundo e é esperado que a capacidade instalada possa chegar a 30000 megawatts até ao final de 2002. Na capacidade é previsível um aumento de cerca de 20% por ano durante os próximos anos. São planejados investimentos em energia eólica nos E.U.A de US $ 3 bilhões para o futuro imediato. O Brasil tem aprovados 20 projetos de mais de 1000 megawatts cada um para a futura construção. O Reino Unido já aprovou planos para grandes parques eólicos offshore, enquanto outros países europeus e a Índia, têm planos para aumentar substancialmente a sua capacidade eólica.
